An ordinary wall decal is flat vinyl: a silhouette, one colour, no depth. These 3D wall decals work differently — they imitate an opening in the wall, with an animal looking out of it or a mouse hole leading into it. The effect comes from perspective and shading printed into the artwork itself.
From across the room it reads as a real opening. Up close you see the flat surface. That double take is the whole point of this kind of motif.
The hedgehog sticker shows an animal peering out of a hole in the wall — good for a hallway, a child's room or a kitchen nook near skirting height. The mouse hole set follows the same idea and traditionally goes just above the skirting board, where a real hole would be.
Both work best where nobody expects them: beside a door, behind a plant, at the end of a corridor.
The surface has to be clean, dry and free of grease. Vinyl wall stickers hold best on smooth, matt-painted walls and on tiles. Woodchip wallpaper and heavily textured plaster are the problem cases — there the film only touches the high points of the texture and starts lifting at the edges after a while.
Before you press it down for good, tape the design up with masking tape and look at it from a few metres away. Height changes the effect a lot: mounted too high, a hole in the wall stops being believable.
Designs that imitate an opening need the right eye level. A mouse hole belongs at the skirting board, an animal looking out belongs at eye or chest height. View the perspective built into the artwork from a different angle than intended and the illusion breaks.
Lighting joins in too. A wall lit from the side strengthens the sense of depth; evenly lit surfaces flatten it.
The mouse hole set contains several stickers. Spread across a wall they make a small scene that people discover piece by piece.
With several stickers in one room the rule is the same as with pictures: one family of motifs, not three. Animals next to geometric shapes look accidental; several animals of the same style look like a collection.
They do their best work in spaces you pass through — hallway, staircase, kitchen nook — where you are moving and your eye catches them on the way. In a living room, where you sit and study the wall for a long time, the illusion holds up less well at close range.
Pull the sticker off slowly and at a shallow angle. With older adhesive, warm air from a hairdryer on a low setting helps. On freshly painted walls — less than about four weeks old — paint can come away with it, so it pays to wait before putting them up.
For rented flats that is the real advantage over framed wall decor: no drill holes, no wall plugs, nothing to fill in when you move out.
